黃初平(328 ——?),又名皇初平,俗稱黃大仙,自號“赤松子”,列仙班玉帝勒詔,姓崇、名壘,號司天。據《 赤松山志》記載:其兄初起乃長子,是為“大皇君”。黃初平生于東晉成帝年間為次子,是為“小皇君”。
關于黃大仙來歷現今有四種說法:金華黃初平說、東莞黃野人說、下邢藍石公說、傳說中神農時的雨師。其中以金華黃初平說最為可信。據《金華府志》載:東晉皇初平,丹溪人(今浙江省蘭溪縣黃湓村,屬金華市管轄)。牧羊遇道士,將至金華山石室中,兄初起尋之四十余年,一日逢道士,引入山相見,“后還鄉,其族盡亡,乃去。初平別號赤松子云。”
傳說黃大仙是金華人的最好實證是在金華北山早在晉代即建有的最早的黃大仙祠——赤松觀祖廟(現在在恢復建設當中)。而晉代著名理論家、醫學家葛洪《神仙傳》和南宋道士倪守約《赤松山志》中關于黃大仙的記載也印證了此種說法。但是無論哪種說法,我們基本可以判定黃初平是先成仙于民間,然后才被輯入道教典籍中成為道教徒宣傳其宗教的工具,而其人物形象是老百姓在口頭傳承的過程中則依照民眾的意愿對這一形象進行反復加工的結果。
黃初平“顯于東晉,上祖皆隱德不仕”,其出生并非名門望族,而是出生在一個日出而作,日落而息,且善根深厚的布衣之家。黃初平《自序》曰:“予少家貧,炊糖不繼”。十五歲是黃初平生平的重要轉折點,被其師“赤松子”引人金華山石室,傳授秘旨,服食,辟谷之術,丹藥長生良方,其性完全陶醉于山水之間,超然物外,絕棄世塵,精研丹法,積公德累善行,時覺四十年,黃初平已得道成仙。后黃大仙云游各地,做了許多警惡除奸,普濟勸善的好事,深得民心,被世人尊奉為財神、吉祥之神、萬能之神。
